I think it's the whole vampire thing. Both LKH and SM write vampire/undead-themed books, so the readers put two and two together, added it the most fashionable name to ridicule, and got five.

If Timothy Zahn is the godfather of the Star Wars EU, then Hamilton could probably be considered the godmother of the modern-day vampire/romance/girl-power/detective/action books that seem to be flooding the stores over the past couple of years, in my opinion.

I've read a very small amount of Hamilton's stuff (which is still a ton more than what I've read of Meyer's work), but from what I've read, I think Hamilton could successfully pull off an appropriate Mara Jade-centric SW novel.
