Question mainly for writers

What writing software do you use? I have Word, but I hear good things about OpenOffice.

I use Word, too, but OpenOffice is a free alternative that's looks to be compatible with Word and has had some good reviews.

I picked up the latest issue of The Writer today and they have an article about free writing software and the article's author is pretty high on OpenOffice. I'm thinking that if you're satisfied with Word, you really don't need to change. I'm considering getting the OpenOffice software, but I'd want to hear more from other users, first.
I use Word '07. Takes a little getting used to but I like it fine. I've heard of OpenOffice, but never tried it.
I have Word '03 and probably wouldn't mind updating to Word '07, but OpenOffice is free and compatible with Word, so it looks like an interesting alternative.
That works, too, although I think I should use a pencil more because I have the habit of making quite a few mistakes. :)

OpenOffice is okay, but it's not better than Word. I think OpenOffice has spelling suggestions as you type, which is fancy, but I personally would find it rather distracting. Mostly, though, I only use it when my Windows machine crashes and I have to use Linux.

If you're looking for open-source software, though, I just recently learned that both OpenOffice and Word are a byproduct of AbiWord, which you can also download and use, and it works pretty much like both products, and probably runs on all platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc). Again, I don't think it's much better than Word :) I like it because you can code for it, but it's rather complicated to do for normal writing.

My personal favorite is still LaTeX :). If I'm just working with content, I may use Word, Google Docs, or WordPad, but for the ultimate formatting power, LaTeX is the way to go.
